X-ray Spectrum of the Black Hole Candidate X1755-338

We report the rst detection of a hard power-law tail in the X-ray spectrum of the black hole candidate (BHC) binary X1755-338, which was observed in 1989 March-September during the TTM Galactic Centre survey. In addition, an ultrasoft thermal component with a temperature of 1:1 1:4 keV was also detected. We demonstrate that the soft and hard X-ray components of X1755-338 vary independently, as ...

The broad band X – ray spectrum of the black hole candidate GRS 1758 – 258

We present the results of a BeppoSAX observation of the black hole candidate GRS 1758–258 carried out in 1997, while the source was in its low/hard state. The X–ray spectrum, simultaneously observed over the broad energy range from 0.1 to 200 keV, can be well described by a Comptonized emission model with electron temperature kTe = 31.4 +3.4 −2.5 keV and optical depth τ = 4.0 +0.2 −0.3 (spheric...

Optical Studies of the Transient Dipping X-ray Sources X1755−338 and X1658−298 in Quiescence

We have studied the optical counterparts of X1755−338 and X1658−298 in their X-ray “off” states. The first observations of X1755−338 in quiescence show that the counterpart, V4134 Sgr, has faded by more than 3.5 mag in V . If the mass donor in the system is an M0V star as implied by the period, our upper limits on the brightness of the counterpart suggest that it is more distant than 4 kpc. We ...

Dramatic variability of X-ray absorption lines in the black hole candidate Cygnus X-1

We report results from a 30 ks observation of Cygnus X-1 with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Numerous absorption lines were detected in the HETGS spectrum. The lines are associated with highly ionized Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, and Fe, some of which have been seen in earlier HETGS observations. Surprisingly, however, we discovered d...
